In that case, you need an external light meter to tell you what combination of shutter speed and aperture will give you a good exposure for the light that you're in.But if you don't want to buy a dedicated light meter just for your film camera, you can often use the light meter that's built into your DSLR or Point and Shoot camera to find out what the correct exposure for the digital camera should be, then use the same settings with your film camera.For example, one of my SLRs light meters decided not to work, but I needed to take some pictures with it for a class. So I brought my DSLR out shooting with me too. I used the DSLR to find the perfect exposure settings, then I used the same settings to take a picture with the film camera.  It worked like a charm, and all of my black and white film photos had perfect exposure.That make more sense?
